PM Modi, Putin discuss Ukraine conflict and strategic ties amid US tariff pressure

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two leaders discussed the Special Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

President Putin briefed PM Modi on the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, and Modi reiterated India’s consistent stand favouring a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The talks came at a time when the United States is increasing pressure on India over its oil trade with Russia. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil.

This move raises the total tariff to 50 per cent — the highest the US has imposed on any country so far.

The new tariffs are set to take effect from August 27.
