Chandigarh: Punjab Police have arrested Joga Singh, the former personal security officer (PSO) of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, from Delhi Airport in connection with a 2015 drug smuggling case. Singh, considered close to Khaira, was wanted by Fazilka police in the matter.
According to police sources, the case was registered against nine people, including the former chairman of the market committee Dhilwan.
During the operation in 2015, Fazilka police claimed to have recovered 2 kg of heroin, 24 gold biscuits, two Pakistani SIM cards, and a Tata Safari vehicle. Investigators later named Joga Singh as an accused and had been searching for him since.
Given the seriousness of the case, the Punjab government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma. Khaira, who was earlier arrested for questioning in the same case, has repeatedly denied any links to the matter.
Joga Singh’s arrest is likely to trigger political turbulence in Punjab once again, with the opposition already targeting both the state government and Khaira over the case. Police are expected to probe whether his interrogation leads to fresh revelations.
