Punjab still fighting for its rights, says CM Bhagwant Mann on Republic Day

Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday criticised the Centre over pending dues related to MGNREGA and rural development funds, saying the state continues to fight for what is rightfully its own. Addressing a gathering after unfurling the national flag on Republic Day, Mann said his government would make every possible effort to ensure that Chandigarh becomes Punjab’s capital. Chandigarh is currently a Union Territory and serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

Warning those attempting to disturb peace in the state, the chief minister said his government is firmly committed to maintaining harmony and brotherhood at all costs. He asserted that any attempt to disrupt communal amity would be dealt with strictly.

Mann also highlighted several initiatives undertaken by his government, including free electricity for households, government jobs for youth, and sustained campaigns against drugs and gangsters.

Referring to Punjab’s contribution to the nation, the chief minister said the state is known as the country’s food bowl and its sword arm. He said Punjab paid a heavy price for the nation’s progress, with its natural resources bearing the brunt. “Our groundwater has depleted and our rivers have been polluted,” he said.

Expressing anguish, Mann said that despite making the highest sacrifices, Punjab continues to face injustice. “It pains me to say that even today Punjab has to fight for its rights and knock on the doors of courts,” he said.
