AAP moves Rajya Sabha Chairman, seeks disqualification of 7 MPs over BJP switch

New Delhi: Sanjay Singh on Sunday submitted a petition to Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan seeking disqualification of seven MPs who recently quit the Aam Aadmi Party and announced their merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Addressing a press conference, Singh termed the move as defection and a violation of the anti-defection law under the Constitution.

AAP calls it betrayal of mandate

Singh argued that the MPs were elected on AAP’s ticket and their switch to BJP goes against the mandate given by voters, especially in Punjab.

The seven MPs include Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikram Sahney and Swati Maliwal.

Most of these MPs are from Punjab.

Legal backing cited

Sanjay Singh said the party has consulted senior legal experts, including Kapil Sibal, who believe the MPs are liable for disqualification under existing laws.

He maintained that the development is not just political but also raises serious constitutional concerns, urging the Chairman to cancel their membership at the earliest.
