Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party has officially appointed former Barnala MLA Keval Singh Dhillon as the new president of its Punjab unit. The appointment was announced through an official party order issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh on May 28.
Dhillon, considered a close associate of former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, takes over the role from Sunil Jakhar, whose tenure was nearing completion.
The BJP leadership’s decision to appoint a Sikh leader to head the Punjab unit is being viewed as part of the party’s strategy to strengthen its outreach among Sikh voters ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Party insiders had earlier indicated that senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh was advocating for a Sikh face to lead the state organisation.
