Chandigarh: The Punjab State Election Commission has announced the election schedule for four municipal councils — Gurdaspur, Dinanagar, Qadian in Gurdaspur district and Sham Chaurasi in Hoshiarpur district.
With the issuance of the notification, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect within the jurisdiction of the concerned municipal councils.
According to the election programme, the filing of nomination papers began on Friday (May 30) and will continue till June 3, 2026. Scrutiny of nominations will be carried out on June 4, while candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations on June 5.
Polling will be held on June 13 from 8 am to 4 pm, with counting of votes to take place after the conclusion of polling.
The announcement comes a day after the declaration of results for municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats across Punjab, where the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) registered a sweeping victory.
In the recently concluded civic polls, AAP emerged as the dominant force, winning 957 of the 1,976 wards across eight municipal corporations, 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats, accounting for 48.45 per cent of the total seats.
Congress finished second with 397 wards (20.08 per cent), followed by Shiromani Akali Dal with 192 wards (9.71 per cent) and BJP with 172 wards (8.70 per cent). Independent candidates secured 251 wards (12.69 per cent), while the Bahujan Samaj Party won seven wards (0.35 per cent).
The upcoming elections in the four municipal councils will be closely watched as parties look to build on their performance ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
