Jalandhar: Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur on Wednesday made a surprise visit to Lakhanpal village, one of the key hotspots for drug trafficking in Jalandhar. She was accompanied by DCP (Investigation) Manpreet Singh Dhillon and several other senior officials.

The village located close to Jandiala has long been identified as a major hub for illegal drug activity. As soon as the police team arrived, local residents also gathered at the site.

Residents interacted with the commissioner about the ongoing issue of drug trafficking in the area and assured full cooperation with the police. They claimed that since the Punjab government launched its anti-drug campaign, drug sales in the village have come to a halt.

They further vowed to inform the police immediately if any trafficker attempts to sell drugs in the village. Villagers also thanked CP Dhanpreet Kaur for visiting, noting that she is the first police commissioner to set foot in their village.

Woman impersonating police officer arrested in Kurukshetra; villagers stunned by revelation

Kurukshetra: A woman posing as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Haryana Police was recently arrested in Kurukshetra, leaving her village residents shocked.

The accused, identified as Anchal, had been seen by many in police uniform at various public events, including Pehowa Chaitra-Chaudas Mela, Balapur Mela, Arunay Mela, and Navratri Mela in Chandigarh. However, she had not been spotted in her native village for several months.

Her social media reels, where she appeared in full police uniform, had led villagers to believe she had joined the Haryana Police. Many even praised her, thinking she had become an officer.

According to villagers, Anchal was academically bright and had completed a B.Sc. She aspired to go to Canada but was unable to do so due to financial constraints. Her family had reportedly been looking for a suitor who could take her abroad after marriage.

A woman from a nearby village revealed that Anchal had befriended her daughter about a month ago at a tailoring shop in Gandhi Nagar. Claiming to be a police officer posted in Ismailabad, Anchal began frequenting their house and often stayed overnight.

On April 18, Anchal allegedly left the house with the woman’s daughter, saying she was heading to duty. When the girl failed to return and did not reach the tailoring shop as claimed, the family grew suspicious and contacted the shopkeeper—who confirmed she hadn’t arrived at all.

The incident eventually led to Anchal’s exposure and arrest. Investigations are underway to determine the extent of her impersonation and whether others were involved.

  • SC adjourns plea of Jagtar Singh Hawara seeking transfer to Punjab jail

SC adjourns plea of Jagtar Singh Hawara seeking transfer to Punjab jail

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned for two weeks the hearing on a plea filed by Jagtar Singh Hawara, an accused in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, seeking his transfer from Tihar jail in Delhi to a prison in Punjab.

A bench headed by Justice B R Gavai deferred the matter after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Chandigarh administration, sought time to respond to the petition.

During an earlier hearing on February 4, the Punjab government had opposed the transfer, arguing that Hawara could not be shifted to Punjab since he was facing trial in Chandigarh.

“He has no claim in Punjab. If he has to be transferred, it should be to Chandigarh UT,” the Advocate-General had told the court. He added that a similar plea had been dismissed by the Delhi High Court in 2018.

The Advocate-General also pointed out that Hawara was tried in Chandigarh, where he had once escaped from jail, and that the rules of Punjab prisons did not apply to Chandigarh. The Delhi government, too, had opposed the transfer, citing Punjab’s status as a border state and recommending Chandigarh as a more suitable location.

The bench had earlier directed the Centre, the Delhi government, and the Chandigarh administration to submit their responses to the plea.

Hawara, 54, has sought transfer to a Punjab jail citing good conduct and family reasons. He argued that the offence occurred during a period of social unrest in Punjab and that his 14-year-old daughter resides in the state.

He also claimed that no case is pending against him in Delhi, which is preventing him from participating in ongoing proceedings in Punjab.

Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing Hawara, told the court that all co-accused in the jailbreak case are currently lodged in Punjab jails.

He also mentioned that the Director-General (Prisons) had recommended Hawara’s transfer to Punjab as far back as October 7, 2016.

Man posing as gangster Goldy Brar’s brother arrested for extortion attempt in Mohali

Chandigarh: The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police has arrested a man from Mohali for allegedly trying to extort Rs 1 crore from a local automobile showroom owner by posing as the brother of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar. The accused has been identified as Lovejit Singh, a resident of Bargari in Faridkot district.

According to police, Lovejit threatened to kill the complainant and his family if the ransom demand was not met. A case has been registered against him at Sohana police station under relevant sections of the law.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused used virtual numbers and social media platforms to conceal his identity and make ransom calls in a bid to evade police action.

The DGP warned people against falling prey to such fake extortion attempts, stating that many criminals with no links to known gangs are using the names of gangsters to spread fear and extort money.

He urged the public to report any such ransom calls immediately so that appropriate legal action can be taken.
