Amritsar: Rural Police on Monday intensified its crackdown in connection with the alleged attack, vandalism and attempt to free a detainee from Majitha police station by conducting a raid at the residence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia.

A police team led by SP Aditya Warrier reached Majithia’s residence in the Green Avenue area of Amritsar. However, the SAD leader was not present at the house during the operation. Police officials said raids are being carried out at multiple locations in an effort to trace and arrest those named in the case.

Addressing the media, Amritsar Rural SSP Sohail Qasim Mir said the action was linked to an incident that took place at Majitha police station on Sunday. He stated that Jobanpreet Singh had been arrested in connection with FIR No. 90 registered at the police station.

According to the SSP, around 11:30 am on Sunday, Bikram Singh Majithia, along with members of a farmers’ organisation, gathered outside the police station. He alleged that a group of protesters unlawfully entered the police station premises and began searching different rooms.

The police officer claimed that the group reached the room where Jobanpreet Singh was being questioned and allegedly attempted to interfere in the investigation process. Police have accused those involved of attacking the police station, damaging property and trying to secure the release of the detainee from custody.

Officials said special teams have been constituted to identify all those involved in the incident. CCTV footage and other evidence are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case has triggered a political controversy, with the Shiromani Akali Dal maintaining that the police action is politically motivated, while authorities insist that legal action is being taken based on the events that unfolded at the police station.
