PM Modi says India ready for ‘historic step’ on women’s empowerment ahead of special Parliament session

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government is firmly moving towards women’s empowerment as Parliament begins its three-day special session.

His remarks come ahead of discussions on amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, aimed at implementing women’s reservation by 2029.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi said the country is ready to take a historic step, adding that respect for women is central to national progress.

As per the proposed constitutional amendments, the number of Lok Sabha seats is expected to increase from 543 to around 850 after delimitation based on the latest census. This expansion is aimed at ensuring 33% reservation for women without reducing existing representation.

The bill also proposes increasing seats in state assemblies and Union Territories to accommodate the quota. Reserved seats for women will be allocated on a rotational basis across constituencies.
