Punjab govt plea against extra water to Haryana dismissed by High Court in BBMB row

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the Punjab government’s petition in the Bhakra Beas Management Board water dispute case, stating that the matter had already been heard last year.

The court advised the state government to raise its concerns before the Centre instead of seeking relief again through the High Court.

The petition was filed after BBMB decided to release an additional 8,500 cusecs of water to Haryana. Punjab had challenged the move, arguing that Haryana had already utilised its allocated share and was not entitled to extra water.

The state government also contended that BBMB does not have the legal authority to allocate water beyond fixed quotas and alleged that the decision was taken in violation of procedural norms. Punjab claimed that the mandatory seven-day notice for the meeting was not given and the agenda was not shared on time.

Earlier, the High Court had passed orders on May 6, 2025, regarding dam safety and water sharing. Punjab has already approached the Supreme Court with a Special Leave Petition (SLP) and also filed a review petition in the High Court, alleging that BBMB misled the court.
